It was only a matter of time

My initial reaction to the Boston registration and qualifying time changes was sadness and frustration. My goal for the May marathon is to run a Boston qualifying time. I was so upset when I realized that even if I do run a BQ, my chances of actually getting in are slim to none! But that more I thought about it, the more I realized I am being silly. It's just a marathon. There are plenty of others to choose from.

The more I thought about how my dream of running Boston will most likely never happen, the more I realized that I am ok with that! If I do BQ this may, I will always have those results. I am in control of running a qualifying time and the BAA is in control of registration. It is what it is and complaining will not change that.

In 2013, the time I need to run drops from 3:40 to 3:35. So, I am going to shoot for reaching the 3:35 time a year in advance! Bring on the speed work!

  1. ROCK ON! I'm so glad you are not letting the changes stop you from your goal! I have seen so many Negative Nancies that are throwing in the towel and it makes me so sad! The goal was to qualify so damn it all, go qualify! They can never take that a way from you and why sell yourself short and not see if you can't qualify to begin with!?!? So happy to see your aren't letting it stop you but rather challenging yourself to go out there and be the best you can be! Cheers!!!!

  2. Oh lady! You're at a 3:44?? I can EASILY get you to a 3:35 if you wanted. Let's talk... Martian Marathon, right? I can send you a few workouts and I'll pace you. You have a month and a half-- plenty of time! Let me know.

  3. Steph- I am actually running the Martian half. The marathon I am running isn't until May 28th. But, please, please, please send me the work outs. I trust anything you say! Seriously. Coming from a young woman who has ran 55 marathon, I wouldn't doubt a single piece of advice you are willing to share with me.

  4. "I am in control of running a qualifying time and the BAA is in control of registration." I love that quote - one of the best single-sentence sum-ups I've seen on the whole situation!

I have no doubt that you've got a sub-3:35 in you. Go for it!

  5. You can do it Steph. I know you have it in you. Now me - not going to happen! I'm like you though, there are lots out there to run and really even if I did qualify, I'm not sure I would spend the money to go out there when there are others I would want to run first.

  6. 3:35 for 2013 is very doable. Just focus on improving each race and you will be surprised how quickly it comes.
